Carl Edwards Says NO To Nationwide Series

photo credit:  Nick Wass/The Associated Press

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- After competing the past seven years for Roush Fenway Racing in the Nationwide Series, all while running a full Cup Series schedule, Carl Edwards has decided not to run any Nationwide races in 2012.

"The way we're approaching this season is, I'm not committing to any races right now," Edwards said. "And as the season goes, if I decide I'm just a nervous ball of energy on Saturdays and I can't function without going and racing -- because that might be the case -- then we'll work to try to go [Nationwide] racing."

I'm hoping this lets me focus more on the Cup car, lets me be a better Cup racer by maybe having more time during the race weekend to maybe hone the setups in.

-- CARL EDWARDS

Edwards' most ardent racing goal of winning two championships in the same season was blunted on two fronts last season. First, NASCAR issued a rule limiting drivers to racing for only one national series championship in any season.

"Once they said we could not run for the championship, I had already committed and Roush and the sponsors had already committed to running the full season," Edwards said, "so we stuck with it and we did it. But to me, that was really, in my mind, my last real go at it for the whole season."

Edwards' hopes for the Sprint Cup championship ended when Tony Stewart won five of 10 Chase races in 2011. He and Edwards were tied in points following the Ford 400 finale, but Stewart won the championship via the tiebreaker.

Edwards did have the consolation prize of earning the 2011 Nationwide Series owners' championship for RFR, but says he's compelled to do more in 2012.

"I'm hoping this lets me focus more on the Cup car," Edwards said, "lets me be a better Cup racer by maybe having more time during the race weekend to maybe hone the setups in.

"I don't know how it will actually affect our performance but I do know my calendar is a lot more open and I'm able to breathe a little more. And I know my family and everyone will really appreciate that [my schedule is less hectic on Fridays and Saturdays]."

Edwards said there are circumstances that might cause him to reconsider -- although it might take nearly a third of either season for that to occur.

"Truly I learned so many things in that Nationwide car that it's a real toss up whether or not it'll help the [Cup] performance on Sunday," Edwards said. "I've made some big mistakes on Saturday that helped me not to make them on Sunday.

"We could get 10 races in [to the season] and I could say 'Hey, I'm better off racing on Saturdays.' Then, it would be on me to go look for some way to put something together so that we could go race." - BY DAVE RODMAN - www.NASCAR.com

'SMOKE' Steals The Saturday Show Once Again At Daytona

You couldn’t blame Clint Bowyer if he’s getting tired of being beaten -- barely -- by his teammates.

With a shove from Landon Cassill, Tony Stewart surged past Bowyer, his teammate for a day at Kevin Harvick Inc., to win Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300, Stewart’s fourth consecutive victory in the season-opening Nationwide Series race at Daytona International Speedway.

Bowyer, who lost Thursday’s second Daytona 500 qualifying race by .005 seconds to Richard Childress Racing teammate Jeff Burton, came home second, .007 seconds behind Stewart. Cassill ran third, followed by Dale Earnhardt Jr., who had pushed Bowyer for six laps after a restart on Lap 115 of the 120-lap race.

Turner Motorsports teammates Reed Sorenson and Jason Leffler were fifth and sixth, respectively. Danica Patrick finished 14th, one lap down, her best result in 14 Nationwide starts.

Stewart, who earned his 10th victory in 91 Nationwide starts, had to overcome a cut tire, which forced him to restart 11th -- the last driver on the lead lap -- when the field came to the green flag on Lap 115. Fortunately for Stewart, he hooked up with Cassill, who pushed him to the front.

“We restarted 11th, and it really wasn’t a huge drama,” Stewart said. “They reminded me that we went from 14th to third in two laps [earlier in the race], so we knew we had a good enough car to do it. It was just a matter of what the scenario was going to be.

“The Gibbs teammates [Kyle Busch and Joey Logano] were separated [for the restart]. Clint and Dale Jr. were separated there. So everybody had to find their partners again, and that gave us a chance to get with Landon Cassill and get a big run at the front.”

Bowyer was philosophical about the close finish.

“[Junior] shoved me all the way to the last lap,” Bowyer said. “Coming off [Turn] 4, we had a good run, and I tried to block the No. 4’s [Stewart] momentum, and about that time Junior ducked under me, so I had to block him, and all hell broke loose.

“That’s the thing about this place. No matter what the race is, the ending’s always great.”

Cassill also was involved in another pivotal moment of the race.

With the field bunched after a restart on Lap 104, Cassill moved down on drafting partner Brad Keselowski, knocking Keselowski’s No. 22 Dodge into the infield grass. Keselowski, the 2010 Nationwide Series champion, turned back across the track and sandwiched the No. 39 Ford of Josh Wise against the outside wall in the tri-oval, then bounced off the wall himself.

The crash ended Keselowski’s streak of 102 consecutive races without a DNF.

The race produced restrictor-plate racing like no one had ever seen before. By Lap 55, a paired-up four-car breakaway involving the tandems of Keselowski-Trevor Bayne and Busch-Logano had opened a 17-second lead on Stewart and Bowyer, who were running fifth and sixth at the time.

By the time NASCAR called a debris caution on Lap 100, there were only 12 cars on the lead lap -- unheard of in modern-day restrictor-plate racing, which typically features large packs of cars racing in close quarters within a few seconds of each other.

Busch and Logano were drafting partners and contenders for the win until the second corner of the final lap.

Busch was pushing his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate, but off-center contact sent Logano spinning. Busch took the blame for the accident.

“It was just unfortunate with Joey there,” Busch said after watching the replay of the incident. “We had two great race cars all day. We worked together the whole time. All we wanted to do was bring it home in one piece, and unfortunately we didn’t make it -- just circumstances. I saw the No. 4 [Stewart] coming up in my mirror really, really quick, so I tried to block the middle and come down just a little bit.

“Obviously, that off-centered me from Joey’s rear bumper and turned him sideways -- completely my fault. Unintentional, but just trying to make it to where the No. 4 didn’t have room to shoot up through the middle of us there and make us all three-wide [and] all pushing each other. I hate it for those guys and Joey. ... Just unfortunate at the end there.”

Busch finished seventh and Logano came home 12th.

Pit road at Daytona has been a veritable briar patch for Earnhardt, and Saturday was no exception. Stopping under caution on Lap 17, Earnhardt drove past his No. 5 pit stall and headed for the No. 88, his Sprint Cup number. The crew remedied that by holding out a No. 88 pit sign for Earnhardt on the next stop, meaning that both Earnhardt and JR Motorsports teammate Aric Almirola had No. 88 signs. - sporting news wire service

NASCAR Makes Nationwide Changes

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.

NASCAR officials made a pair of changes to the cars in the NASCAR Nationwide Series Wednesday at Daytona International Speedway. The sanctioning body is attempting to slow the cars, which topped 200 mph in both practice sessions.

Between the first and second practice, NASCAR reduced the size of the tapered spacers, which limit air flow to the carburetors and therefore slow the cars, with the alteration going into effect for the second session.

In that, teams went even faster with Tony Stewart leading the field with a lap of 202.238 mph and Brad Keselowski following at 202.234 mph. Aric Almirola and Dale Earnhardt Jr. also topped 200 mph in the session.

The tapered spacer will be up to 1 1/16th of an inch. A restrictor plate will also be added to the cars between the spacer and the carburetor. That plate, which can be 61/64ths of an inch, will further disrupt the air flow to the carburetor and should slow the cars. The change will be in place in time for Thursday's practice sessions.

“We didn’t have a test like the Cup teams had, so we’re allowing the teams to make changes during today’s practices,” Nationwide Series director Joe Balash said after the first change. "(The 200.303 mph) was not really the number we’re looking for.”

Danny Lawrence, of Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines, said NASCAR is shooting to slow the cars to around 195 mph. Nine teams were faster than 196 mph in Wednesday's final session. - by lee spencer - www.foxsports.com
