As long as Roush Fenway Racing driver Carl Edwards has been in NASCAR, he’s known nothing but double duty on a race weekend. In 2005, Edwards’ first year in the Cup series, he also competed full time in what is now known as the Nationwide Series. The next year, he ran both full schedules again. The same goes for 2007 and 2008. That’s four years of running both schedules, running back and forth from each garage, commuting several times a year from a Cup venue to a Nationwide track, not getting much sleep, worrying about two cars, two teams. Other drivers have tried it, but none has done it as long – and as successfully – as Edwards. In those four years, he’s finished in the top 10 in Cup points three times and in the No. 2 series’ top three all four years – including the 2007 championship. How much longer can Edwards keep up the pace? “You know, I don't know,” Edwards said. “I'm enjoying it right now. Racing with [Nationwide crew chief] Drew [Blickensderfer] and these guys, Saturdays are a blast. To be able to win races and have my friends and my family here and have a chance to race for championships, it's good.

“So as long as [car owner] Jack [Roush] will let me do it and NASCAR will let me do it and we're competitive, you know, I plan on doing it for a while.” Roush, sitting nearby, then got a puzzled look on his face. “That was a great question,” Roush said. “I thought I understood next year was the last year [Edwards] wanted to do it.” That’s not exactly Edwards’ interpretation. “I'm kind of going a year at a time, but I don't really know,” Edwards said after the Nationwide finale at Homestead. “If I'm sitting here a year from now and we've won 10 races and a championship, it's up to you guys.” Chances are good, however, that the decision to run both schedules is in Edwards’ hands. And he might continue to compete for both championships indefinitely. “I really enjoy running both series,” Edwards said. “It’s a great thing for me. I don’t know what else I’d do on Saturday. I get bored really easily, so it’s a great thing. It’s an opportunity I really enjoy, and I get to be around a lot of great people and great drivers and have a chance to win a championship.” - scenedaily.com
