'COCA-COLA 600' RACE PREVIEW - RACE 12 OF 36
50 Years of “Firsts”: Coca-Cola 600 History Overflows With Highlights Sunday will be the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 500, one of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series’ true “majors.”
It is NASCAR’s longest race – and one of the most historically significant, having been the scene of a number of “firsts” in the form of NASCAR Sprint Cup debuts, or a driver’s first win in the series.
Some highlights:
Series debuts – Dale Earnhardt in 1975; Janet Guthrie in 1976; Dale Earnhardt Jr. in 1999; Michael Waltrip in 1985; Elliott Sadler in 1998.
First Series Victories – David Pearson in 1961; Jeff Gordon in 1994; Bobby Labonte in 1995; Matt Kenseth in 2000; Casey Mears in 2007.
Stewart-Haas Racing: The Real Deal The seemingly inevitable breakthrough victory for the new Stewart-Haas Racing organization happened this past Saturday night, as Tony Stewart won the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. Next goal: Winning a points race.
Stewart comes into the 600 second in the series standings while his teammate Ryan Newman is eighth.
Neither driver has won the 600.
Starting With Hornish, Open-Wheel Exodus Especially Evident This Week Sam Hornish enjoyed his first NASCAR victory this past Saturday, winning the Sprint Showdown, which qualified him for the elite all-star field. It was a major breakthrough for the 2006 Indianapolis 500 champion, who left open-wheel racing prior to the 2008 season, for NASCAR.
With the Indianapolis 500 also being held Sunday, it’s interesting to note the various former open-wheelers such as Hornish who have left open-wheel for stock cars, including:
2000 Indy 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya; Tony Stewart, the 1997 IndyCar Series champion; Jeff Gordon; Robby Gordon; Kasey Kahne; Casey Mears; AJ Allmendinger; Scott Speed; Dave Blaney; Max Papis.
Coca-Cola 600: A Unique Animal NASCAR’s longest race is also, arguably, its most unique. It starts in the day, races through twilight and ends in the evening. As a result, the longest race is long on strategy, putting a premium on the performance of not only the driver, but the crew as well.
Fuel mileage, pit decisions and driver endurance are highlighted more than ever – perhaps a partial explanation for the race’s occasional surprise winners.
For the fourth week this season, the top four drivers in the NASCAR Sprint cup Series points standings are all past champions. Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 is important for all four – for different reasons:
Jeff Gordon: With a win, Gordon would tie Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip for victories at Lowe’s Motor Speedway with six. He also would close the increasingly important Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup bonus points gap. With each win in the 26-race “regular season,” a driver earns 10 bonus points toward his Chase seeding. Gordon, with one win, has 10 bonus points. Kyle Busch, with three wins, leads with 30.
Tony Stewart: With a win, Stewart would … A) Become the seventh driver to follow up a NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race win with a 600 win; B) Become the first driver-owner to win a points race since Ricky Rudd at Martinsville in 1998; C) Likely become the first driver-owner to lead the points since Alan Kulwicki in 1992; and D) Likely lead the points for the first time since Nov. 20, 2005. Stewart is 29 points behind series leader Gordon. A win would likely give him the points lead.
Kurt Busch: This is an important juncture for Busch. He is heading into a three-track stretch – LMS, Dover and Michigan – where he has average finishes of 20.8, 21.4 and 20.1, respectively. Currently, he is a comfortable 282 points inside the Chase cutoff, but three bad finishes can erase that cushion.
Jimmie Johnson: Like Gordon, Johnson can also tie Allison and Waltrip with six LMS wins. Johnson has not won a points race at LMS since 2005, which must seem like an eternity for the Lowe’s-sponsored driver. He won there five times in six races from 2003-05.
Notebook • There have been 100 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series points races at Lowe’s Motor Speedway, two races per year since the track opened in 1960. In 1961, there were two 100-mile qualifying points races held the week before the May race. The first six fall races at Charlotte were 400-mile events (1960-65). • 37 drivers have posted poles, led by David Pearson with 14. • Fireball Roberts won the pole for the first race, in 1960. • David Pearson posted 11 straight poles at Lowe’s from the fall of 1973 through 1978. • Jeff Gordon and Ryan Newman lead all active drivers in poles, with seven. • Jeff Gordon won five straight poles for the spring race between 1994 and 1998. • 41 drivers have won races, led by Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip with six each. • Joe Lee Johnson won the first race, in 1960. • Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson lead all active drivers in victories, each with five. • There have been 13 back-to-back victories, including three in a row by Fred Lorenzen (fall 1964 and both 1965) and four straight by Jimmie Johnson (both in 2004 and 2005). • A sweep has occurred eight times, including each season from 2004-2007. • Hendrick Motorsports has won 14 races, more than any other organization. • 13 races have been won from the pole, the last by Jimmie Johnson in the 2004 Coca-Cola 600. • The last three races have been won from a top-five starting position. • Jimmie Johnson won the 2003 Coca-Cola 600 from the 37th starting position, the furthest back a race winner has started. - nascar media

LOWE'S MOTOR SPEEDWAY TRACK HISTORY
Lowe's Motor Speedway...Where Racing Lives
Lowe's Motor Speedway was designed and built in 1959 by current chairman O. Bruton Smith. The late Curtis Turner, one of stock car racing's earliest driving stars, was Smith's business partner.
At the time Smith, a native of Oakboro, N.C., was an automobile dealer and short-track stock car racing promoter at Concord Motor Speedway and the Charlotte Fairgrounds. Turner, a Virginian who amassed his money in the lumber industry, became one of the first drivers on the NASCAR circuit after the sanctioning body debuted in 1949.
Together, they built their dream of a 1.5-mile superspeedway on the outskirts of the Queen City and, on June 19, 1960, the first World 600 was run at the new facility.
In 1961, like many superspeedways of the era, the track fell into Chapter 11 reorganization from which it eventually emerged despite lagging ticket sales. After his departure from the speedway in 1962, Smith pursued other business interests in Texas and Illinois. Working within Ford Motor Company's dealership program, Smith became quite successful and began purchasing shares of stock in Lowe's Motor Speedway. By 1975 Smith had again become the majority stockholder in the speedway, regaining control of its day-to-day operations.
He hired H.A. "Humpy" Wheeler as general manager and the two began to implement plans for needed improvements and expansion.
During the ensuing years, Smith and Wheeler demonstrated a commitment to customer satisfaction, building a facility that continuously established new industry standards. Thousands of grandstand seats and luxury suites were built. Food concessions and restroom facilities were added and modernized to increase the comfort of race fans. Smith Tower, a 135,000-square-foot, seven-story facility connected to the speedway's grandstands, was erected and opened in 1988. The building houses the speedway's corporate offices, ticket office, souvenir gift shop, leased office space and The Speedway Club, an exclusive dining and entertainment facility.
In 1984, under the direction of Smith, Lowe's Motor Speedway became the only sports facility in America to offer year-round living accommodations when it built 40 condominiums high above turn one. Twelve additional condominium units were added in 1991.
Another innovation implemented by Smith and Wheeler was a $1.7 million, 1,200-fixture permanent lighting system developed by MUSCO Lighting of Oskaloosa, Iowa. The revolutionary lighting process uses mirrors to simulate daylight without glare, shadows or obtusive light poles.
The lighting system was installed in 1992, allowing Lowe's Motor Speedway to be the first modern superspeedway to host night auto racing.
Ever cognizant of the competitors as well as the spectators, Smith and Wheeler added a new $1 million, 20,000-square-foot Sprint Cup garage area in 1994.
Other additions and improvements include the development of the speedway's 2,000-plus acres. In addition to the speedway, the property, some of which is leased, includes an industrial park that serves as home to several motorsports-related businesses, a modern landfill facility operated by BFI and a natural wildlife habitat.
In addition to the 1.5-mile quad oval, the Lowe's Motor Speedway complex includes a 2.25-mile road course and a six-tenths-mile karting layout in the speedway's infield; a quarter-mile asphalt oval utilizing part of the speedway's frontstretch and pit road; and a one-fifth-mile oval located outside turn three of the superspeedway.
Three NASCAR Sprint Cup Series events, two NASCAR Nationwide Series races and a NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event are among the major events held on the 1.5-mile superspeedway. The Richard Petty Driving Experience and the Jeff Gordon Racing School also use the track extensively throughout the year.
Other events on the various tracks include a weekly, nationally televised short-track series for Legends Cars, Bandoleros and Thunder Cars; World Karting Association regional, national and international races.
In May 2000, The Dirt Track @ Lowe's Motor Speedway, a state-of-the-art, four-tenths-mile clay oval was completed across Highway 29 from the speedway. The stadium-style facility has nearly 14,000 seats and plays host to Dirt Late Models, Modifieds, Sprint Cars, Monster Trucks and the prestigious World of Outlaws World Finals.
Corporations such as Lowe's Home Improvement, Coca-Cola, Miller Brewing, Pfizer Pharmaceuticals and DuPont have rented the speedway to film television commercials or to entertain employees and clients with food, music and race car rides.
Motion pictures such as "Days of Thunder," "Speedway" and "Stroker Ace" and even music videos like Tracy Lawrence's "If the Good Die Young" have been filmed at the speedway. Adding to rental dates are race team testing and automobile manufacturer research.
Lowe's Motor Speedway also annually presents two of the nation's largest car shows and swap meets, the Food Lion AutoFairs in April and September, plus the speedway plays host to the Goodguys Southeastern Nationals each October. With track rentals and events, the speedway is used more than 300 days per year.
Smith will quickly point out that he has yet to complete his vision, and along with his son and current Lowe's Motor Speedway President, Marcus Smith, they continue to improve and expand the facility.
More than 10,000 stadium-style seats, 20 new executive suites and 40 special 32-seat boxes were built in turn four in 1995. In May 1997, the Diamond Tower Terrace grandstand was opened along the backstretch to accommodate an additional 26,000 race fans for The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600. In May 1998, an 11,000-seat expansion of the new Diamond Tower Terrace was completed. Then in May 1999, more than 10,000 new seats were completed in the Toyota Fourth Turn Terrace grandstand. A 10,860-seat expansion of the Ford grandstand on the frontstretch was completed in May 2000. Today the speedway's total seating capacity is approximately 140,000.
The track added a new garage area for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, a state-of-the-art media center and additional restrooms and showers for use by those enjoying the action from the speedway's infield.
These additions are all part of a long-term project calling for additional infrastructure improvements, spectator amenities and the development of adjacent land for possible commercial real estate ventures.
Most recently, Lowe's Motor Speedway added the "Bellagio of dragstrips" to its complex with the completion of zMAX Dragway in 2008. The state-of-the-art facility has been praised as the finest drag racing facility complex in the world by both fans and competitors alike, and opened to a sellout crowd of more than 30,000 for the NHRA Nationals.
Building on the basic philosophy of keeping spectator and competitor comfort a high priority, Lowe's Motor Speedway continues to be a leading promoter and marketer of motorsports activities in the United States. - www.lowesmotorspeedway.com

TAILGATING
Charlotte, N.C., is NASCAR's hometown, so you can bet there's plenty to do around town on a race weekend!
Here's what you need to know before you head out to the races:

From the north:Take I-85 South to Exit 48 (I-485 / Rock Hill), Exit 32 and turn left onto Hwy. 29 North / Tryon or I-85 to Exit 49 -- Speedway Boulevard / Concord Mills or I-85 South to Exit 52 (Poplar Tent Road). Make a left onto Poplar Tent Road, then right onto Hwy. 29 South / Concord Boulevard.
From the south: Take I-77 North to Exit 1 (I-485 East), I-485 to Exit 32. Make a right on Hwy. 29 North / Tryon or I-77 North to Exit 1 (I-485 East), I-485 to Exit 33. Then turn left onto Hwy. 49 North / University City Boulevard and left onto Morehead Road.
Traffic tips
• Exit 49 (Speedway Boulevard) off I-85 is usually the most congested on event days. Good alternates are Hwy. 29 from both the north and the south and Hwy. 49 to Morehead Road.
• The North Carolina DOT will have traffic patterns in place for incoming and outgoing traffic. Please follow their directions. Sometimes you'll have to "turn right to go left." All traffic patterns will eventually lead you back to I-85, I-77 and other major highways. Use maps to make yourself familiar with local roads and alternate routes.
Parking and camping
Speedway camping and parking: Lowe's provides free parking at the speedway for your convenience. "Dry" camping is available in Rock City, Peninsula, Coleman and Morehead campgrounds. Campers are provided with shuttles that run to the speedway on event days and they run daily to the shower houses. Camping with hookups is available at the Fleetwood RV Resort.
Private grounds: There are private camping areas surrounding the speedway, along Hudspeth Road and Moorehead and many roads that run off Moorehead. There are also some on Highway 29 / Concord Parkway outside of Turn 1. Prices for parking range from $10-20. Camping starts from $45 for the weekend.

Fans may bring to Lowe's Motor Speedway:
