Furniture Row Racing has Regan Smith on board as its driver for 12 Sprint Cup races. It hopes that there could be more than 12 races on Smith’s schedule. The team is looking for funding to see if it can increase the number of events. “We’re working hard at it,” Furniture Row Racing General Manager Joe Garone said. “Our intent is to fully fund the 78 and run a full schedule.” Garone would like that to be with Smith, who won the Cup rookie title last year and nearly won the race at Talladega Superspeedway last October. “He wants to win races," said Garone, whose team is entering its fourth Cup season. "He’s fired up. He’s early in his career and he has a lot to prove. He’s really hungry. He’s a great spokesperson and I like the way he carries himself. He’s a really good fit for us.”

The team will compete in both races at Daytona, Talladega, Dover, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Richmond (in September) and both road-course events. Smith picked the 12 races, Garone said. “We talked about it and that’s where he wants to go,” Garone said. The team will do extensive testing and will still lease engines from Hendrick Motorsports. And Garone won’t sacrifice planned tests in order to go run more races unless the funding comes his way. “Having the time by running only 12 races to do plenty of testing and just learning, I think is an advantage,” Garone said. “You’re not at the race track every single week. It gives us time to step back and test.” - scenedaily.com
